Why it's a legit bitch along with blitzing on 4th and 20.
You know, since it's a preseason game.
So blaming Ryan is dumb.

Payton has a thing for forcing Ryan to call zero coverage blitzes. (blitzing both safeties leaving the corners matched up in man on man responsibilities) He admitted doing so at Seattle in 2013 on a 3rd down before the half that allowed a score just after the Saints themselves had scored to cut into the lead.

There's a difference between holding your DC accountable and thinking you can do better.

I understand why he did it against Seattle even though I personally didn't agree with the call. Payton was looking for the big play on defense to continue to turn the tide of momentum after the Seahawks jumped on us quickly. If it would have worked, the offense would have been set up nicely to score again before the half. It didn't work though & Russell Wilson burned the call with a perfect throw.
Matter of fact, it happened late in the playoff loss at Seattle as well when Corey White gave up a completion against Doug Baldwin along the sidelines to basically seal that game for the Seahawks.
There's a time & a place for taking those types of risks though. Both times against Seattle, honestly were legitimate opportunities. It wasn't like Gregg Williams calling one against the 49ers in the 2011-12 playoff game when a potential big play beats you. In that instance, you make situational play calls & force the opposition have to earn it. At the end of that game, Williams served the opportunity for a big play for the 49ers to win up on a platter. The play before Vernon Davis' long reception should have been a warning because Alex Smith overthrew an open receiver down the sidelines in man coverage because Williams brought the house. He was too predictable & got burned because of it.

"When someone is chosen in the 6th or 7th round of the draft, it doesn't matter much where they would rather play."
This was the mistake they made. No reasonable explanation to not take him late......

Why didn't ANY team take him late?
You know which teams would have used a second day pick on a top 15 talent? All of them, if they'd been allowed to.

No doubt I'd love to have Collins, but we don't. This has been discussed so many times on here. It just needs to be left alone.
I was adamant about drafting Collins during draft season because of the team's huge question marks at guard. One, he is a gifted athlete. Two, he plays with a mean streak that many of the great ones play with. His nastiness & willingness to finish blocks reminds me of Carl Nicks.
The entire situation surrounding him during the draft was unfortunate. What adds to the frustration is that the Saints didn't even pay him visit afterwards when he was basically in their own backyard & all he wanted was some team to show faith in him.
Also, fans see the current situation at guard & realize we have one player there who is declining at an accelerated rate to the point that he is hardly recognizable anymore. Our other guard is guy who couldn't even beat a washed up center in the previous training camp. Throw in the negative reports so far from training camp plus a bad showing from both in the first preseason game & paranoia begins to set in.
I will admit though, the numerous post & threads about La'el have gotten old. The majority of those post & threads are not well put together because some people simply lack the ability to put their actual thoughts into words. In the end, they are just fans who want to see the team win & they realize that protecting Brees at all cost has proven to be successful. When that hasn't been the case, the results have been mixed. Some fans are just tired of the mixed results especially with Brees getting up in age.

After years of success at uncovering "gems"...it seems the front office is on a hell of "bad picks/trades" streak !
Posted on 8/15/15 at 8:21 pm to tickfawtiger
What bad trades?
We've still found sound pretty good gems in the draft too over the past few years. Our early picks have been the issue imo

Not really. The one late round gem we've drafted in the last 5 years was already traded away, we'll see if the return for him works out. Armstead was a good mid round pick but the book is still out on Jenkins and even Hicks to a degree.

Armstead was a great pick. Pretty obvious at this point

Semantics. Either way we haven't drafted well and limited number of picks hasn't helped.

No, it's pretty obvious Armstead was a steal

Which I've said
A big issue is our lack of picks. Draft is a statistical crap shoot

You can't consistently miss on the early round picks and be successful in the long term.
Nor can you keep trading picks away

I just upvoted this thread. I have been following Saint's drafts since they wasted their first first round pick on Les Kelley. Their failure to draft Collins ranks up there with the Exrleben pick as far as the all time blunders, not because Collins went to LSU, but because they could have had a 1st round player with a 7th round choice. I have said this many times on this board and get chastised every time but I don't care.

We haven't really done that, we've missed all over. Vaccaro is the only 1st who is anywhere close to miss territory since PRob. We've amazingly only had two 2nd round picks in the 6 years before this year. We've hit in the 3rd but the rest of the draft might as well have been forfeited with the exception of Stills.

As a former player, you have no idea how disgusting it is to ask another player to tank a game. It's bad enough to hold out your key players when you lock up a seed in the playoffs, it's a completely different thing to ask a team to tank for a better draft pick next year (especially when a solid percentage of them won't even be on the same team with that 'better' draft pick anyway). The race to the bottom is completely opposite from what the game of football is.
Nobody said ask the players to "tank" the game. Why not put in Griffin? Why not finally fricking play SJB? Since you were a player, why don't you explain exactly what was the point of playing 1st string against Tampa Bay 3rd stringers? Risk injury to Brees for what exactly? Win a game against a 1 win team for what exactly? Not once person, especially not me is saying Brees should have tanked. I'm saying Brees should have been on the bench in the 2nd half, just like TBs entire offense. They didn't throw a pass the entire second half or something like that. I'm saying we see what a 2nd round pick could do instead of him sitting on the bench still (SJB).
How does this not make sense to you? Instead of getting to pick #9, the Saints pick 13 and watch the guy they want go 1 fricking pick in front of them. So what do they do, pick a backup! Yay for that all important win over TB

Get over it, the FO had one of the safest drafts I've seen in the Sean Payton era and for once I am glad they targeted players that shore up the future of the team at positions that were traditionally ignored. You also have some quality players that will make an immediate impact and will grow with the team.
Yeah, cause Shelton and Collins wouldn't make an immediate impact or shore up the future of the team. Why do people have to swallow everything fed to them? The team fricked up. It's ok to admit that.
