Coby Persin, 21, is a YouTube star who performs pranks and experiments
The New Yorker chatted up three young girls, aged 12, 13, and 14, by pretending to be a 15-year-old who lived nearby
They all agreed to meet him when their parents weren't around, with one even climbing into his van

No, read the article. See the other two people in the van, the one's wearing the masks, they are that girl's parents.

Yeah, and they took her phone away after catching her.... What a punishment.

No. He's a cockblocker.

This is offensive to all those who have been raped in vans.

Yet another reason why online dating dating and social media communication will always pale in comparison to real life, interpersonal interaction.
Even as an adult, any time you agree to meet up with someone you met online you run the risk of being potentially scammed or having your well-being jeopardized.
It's not just young teenage females that are foolish and ignorant to the dangers out there. I have been surprised how many adults are willing to just meet a stranger or invite them to their house rather than agreeing to meet in public as a safeguard.
Sometimes, when your desperate to get laid, you are willing to not consider the potential risks and dangers of these sort of hook-ups.

I did. It's not surprising how dumb teens are.
He does own a van and was pretty adept at picking up teen girls....

much more efficient to focus on family members than "social media predators"
also above "social media predators" is ensuring that you create a cohesive family unit to decrease the chance of a child running away

God that is scary. All of the parents had previously spoken with their children about stuff like this.

meeting online or not is irrelevant. you face the same dangers and risk-taking behavior with any meeting with a stranger
you meet a random girl/guy at a bar and you face the exact same risks of danger as meeting somebody at a bar after meeting them online

True, to some extent. However, the dangers increase dramatically when you have had no prior face-to-face interaction with the stranger in question.
The individual posing as a seemingly harmless, pleasant person online could turn out to be a completely different individual. The potential for deception is drastically higher when you are incapable of looking at the person with whom you are conversing with.
It's that potential deception which makes the online interaction more risky, because I agree with you that any instance which involves dealing with someone you are unfamiliar with could be potentially hazardous.

Is it safe to say that these are a bunch of skanks who starting out early? Regardless if they know it's a teenage boy or not?

Yes, yes yes.
This guy's video showcases issues that are so rare that it's almost pointless to make it.
They should make a video where a husband and wife get into a fight that leads to a "I think we need to divorce" comment from the wife (or husband). She slams the door in his face and he walks away pissed off. He takes a few steps outside of the house then goes back inside. He walks into his 4 year old son's room and wakes him up saying, "Shhhh. Mommy's sleeping. I wanted to take you out for ice cream tonight." The two leave the house together. The end.

Well it's got a shite-ton of scared "concerned moms" re-posting on facebook. So mission accomplished. Scare tactics and ad revenue.
