I agree on the shotgun for home defense. 12 gauge with 00 buckshot is like getting hit with nine 9mm rounds at once. Ouch!

To answer OP, not necessary. Keep them both loaded with ammo. Never know how many thugs you'll have to take out. Blast away!

Also, recommend the judge, made by Taurus, as it is quite literally a shotgun hand gun. It shoots .410 shotgun shells and .45 long colt rounds. Smith & Wesson also has the Governor which shoots .45 LC, .45 ACP, and .410 but costs ~$1000 compared to Judge's ~$600.
