I've said it before I'm sure, but when I was a kid, "The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart" LP was standard issue. Everyone's parents had it next to the turntable.

He is probably the best "telephone" (1-sided conversation) bit comic ever, and one of the best "slow burn" and stammer-take reaction actors, ever. In fact, as an actor, probably only Jack Benny is better as a reaction, deadpan, slow-burn guy.
Underrated comic genius - partly because he came up when comedians were, generally, working "blue" (and Newhart is generally very family-friendly) and partly because he became much more recognizable as a television (and film) actor - a line that Carlin and even Pryor flirted with, but never crossed. Other greats like Bill Cosby and the slightly younger Robin Williams, ultimately became more known for their television and film work (and that can be said for Eddie Murphy, as well), just as Newhart did.
Newhart and his best friend Don Rickles seem to just go on and on, though, like 2 old, Jewish energizer bunnies (although Newhart is not Jewish, he gives off that vibe because of his extensive career in the borscht belt.)

I agree. Without a doubt one of the funniest comedians ever. His deadpan delivery is incredible. I miss his style of comedy today. Seems that in today's time, people think vulgar = funny.

only person to ever have two #1 rated television shows with their name in the title.

His shows still hold up. Andy Daly's stand-up album had a Newhart vibe, he played a different character for every track.

"The Button Down Mind..." was so good. As a kid in jr high and high school I practically had every Richard Pryor album memorized (that was when profanity actually had artistic and comedic effect instead of being a lazy crutch). I heard the Newhart album after Pryor and Carlin and even then knew it was special that he could be so "clean" and funny.
*Side note: Has any sitcom actor had two hotter wives on different television shows than Bob?

Bob on Country Music:
I don't like country music, but I don't mean to denigrate those who do. And for the people who like country music, denigrate means 'put down'.
