Regardless, I'm just wondering how it is you legally own a gun. Expungement?
Eta: I see your second followup. I didn't know there was a statute of limitations on certain felonies that expires, allowing you to own a firearm... That's cool.

As far as volunteering info about a gun in the car -- it depends. Some cops are cool with it, and some are paranoid about it.
If asked by a LEO about a gun in the car, I tell them.
In Louisiana I usually offer my CHP when asked for my DL -- definitely would do so if instructed to get out of the vehicle, because at that point I'd be carrying concealed.
