I think telling the cop you have a gun depends on the situation. The one time I told a trooper I had a gun on a traffic stop he said "why would I care unless you are planning to pull it" He just wanted to write a ticket and move on...

Not letting an officer know you have a loaded gun is a bad idea all the time.
If he gives a response like you got, fine. Who cares? Just tell him you have one.
