A/C question: any reason to have two units connected through ducts?

I moved into a home with two units. The one for the living area would not cool below 80 during this heat. The air was cold, but not forceful. Started inspecting the duct work and discovered a 12" duct connected from the cooling of the living area one to the intake side of the other unit
half way across the house. Pulled the duct and blocked the hole. The air is a lot more forceful. Is there any legitimate reason why this would have been connected?

no, I never heard of two systems sharing ducts.

Both units connected to the same duct would cause them fight/push against each other. I'm surprised the weaker unit hasn't burnt up.

Do you see two air handlers?
Are both air handlers working?
Are both outside units running?

Yes, there are two. I have four different filters. Each unit has a bigger 12x24 return and a small 12x12 return. The bedroom side stays cool so that unit doesn't run nearly as often. I have felt suction at all returns.
