Headed down for a few days to the beach. There's supposedly a pier near our place. What should I fish with and what could I catch?

Went down a couple months ago and someone caught 2 8' sharks off the public pier. That's all I got.

Was there last week. Did not see a fish caught off that pier.

mack jr #1 and me fish the pier on our yearly family vacation there. usually see a king or 2 caught from the pier along with the occasional bull red. mack jr #1 catches hard tail and sells them to the other fishermen for bait (makes pretty good $ for dicking around on the pier).
occasionally I see a black tip caught.
best bait for hard tail is that subuki-rig (or whatever the hell you call it) or fresh shrimp. I've tied sand fleas w/o any luck.
show up in the late evenings and there is a group of guys that fish for BIG sharks. they have one heck of an elaborate set-up that is really cool to watch. you remember the pic of a big mako in the back of a ford ranger? that's one of the shark fishing group i'm referring to.
