It doesn't have to work that way you a-hole! There shouldn't have to be an agreement to kill a few to save the rest. That is like saying I'm going to donate money to the protection of children, but I need to occasionally frick one to protect the rest.
WTF

The lions will not make it if they do not have responsible humans to manage their populations and that includes responsible, legal hunting.
History calls bullshite on you. The only reason the population is so low is because of humans.

This is not the case for the lion as its an official threatened species by the world wild life fund and could be listed as endangered very soon.
It's more than just overpopulation management, though. They need land. To give them more land, there needs to be a profit motive for giving them the land.
(And, just to reinforce, the whole idea of hunting elephants, lions, tigers is distasteful to me.)

This makes me sick to my stomach.

It amazes me that people in this thread honestly believe they are doing the world a service by travelling to Africa and killing lions.

It amazes me you apparently want to just let the poachers keep poaching and think that will somehow lead to more lions.
And as dumb as that sounds, it's how your posts are reading.

Poachers don't poach when people legally hunt? You've been a standard-bearer for imbecility in this thread.

quote:The answer is simple, use the money to hire more people to guard and survey the land, but I guess since if people aren't allowed to kill them "legally" they won't donate the money to help perserve them. That is some self righteous b.s. if I've ever heard it.

His point is that governments and locals crack down on poaching when regulated hunting brings in $$$$.
Which is fair. But it doesn't mean people who shoot lions aren't losers, of course.

No, but their effects are lessened by at least some of the money that comes from legal hunts. But hey, let's just take away any regulation at all and I'm sure it will work out.

At least I'm not saying the stupidity you are at the moment.

Thank you. You've been very reasonable and open to both sides in this entire thread. Bravo.

What sounds self righteous to me is people like you and Caterpillar continually saying these people should just give their money away for nothing. Their money is doing more than your pontificating.

And my point was, poachers will poach regardless of what legal hunting brings in. Sure, they may crack down on it, but you seemed to imply legal hunting ends the problem.
How did this turn to a discussion on poaching anyway. I said it amazes me that people think they are doing the whole world a service by traveling to kill lions. Do you really believe they are?

According to Tanzania's wildlife official they are doing a great service.
Saving by killing
quote:
Of all the species found here, lions are particularly important because they draw visitors from throughout the world — visitors who support our tourism industry and economy. Many of these visitors only take pictures. But others pay thousands of dollars to pursue lions with rifles and take home trophies from what is often a once-in-a-lifetime hunt. Those hunters spend 10 to 25 times more than regular tourists and travel to (and spend money in) remote areas rarely visited by photographic tourists.
quote:
In Tanzania, lions are hunted under a 21-day safari package. Hunters pay $9,800 in government fees for the opportunity. An average of about 200 lions are shot a year, generating about $1,960,000 in revenue. Money is also spent on camp fees, wages, local goods and transportation. And hunters almost always come to hunt more than one species, though the lion is often the most coveted trophy sought. All told, trophy hunting generated roughly $75 million for Tanzania’s economy from 2008 to 2011.

Nope. I never implied that.

Or maybe there is a middle ground you assholes aren't willing to consider.
