When does Emerson Hyndman get a serious look at the USMNT?

I know he is still young and did get a brief call up in Europe friendlies, but I feel like now is the time to get this man some minutes. He has yet to sign his extension with Fulham (who rate him highly). He was doing well before his injury last year.
We have some very week WC qualifiers coming up that he could potentially sub in late in the half.

He's so slight, I think he'd get crushed in a serious international or WCQ. I mean actually physically crushed. Like an empty can of soda.
He's still a cycle away, for me.

He's 19... no need to throw him into the fire that is World Cup Qualifiers. Just let him develop with the U-20/U-23 and a few one-off Euro-based friendlies.

I'd imagine sometime this cycle. Obviously needs some physical development, but is likely to get a good chunk of first team time at Fulham. I fully expect him to be at Russia 2018

Way too early to expect any player to make the 2018 roster, much less a 19-year old who is still in the development phase of his game.

19 now means he is 22 in 2018. I sure hope he is at least on the 23 man roster in Russia.
I don't believe the chatter around holding guys back from the first team until they are 'ready'. Throw them in the fire and let's see what happens. Ideally, this is in some kind of friendly or a cake walk (if we ever really have those sans Cuba). If a player is so fragile upstairs that he cannot come back from a a couple poor first team performances when he wasn't ready, then he needs to grow up and learn to deal with adversity.
The best way to get better is by playing against people who are better than you. Malcolm Gladwell proved in statistically when he analyzed hockey teams - the younger players who play against older, more physically mature players for their entire lives had a higher likelihood of making it to the professional level. Soccer is no different.

Yeah, but the best thing for the USMNT isn't necessarily to be in the business of making guys who aren't ready yet better.
Hyndman is technically advanced and by all accounts did well in the Championship last year. But he looked tiny in the U20s this year. He may be a guy that doesn't peak until his late 20s.
Patience.

I've heard the championship league is pretty rough already?

When he starts getting more first team football and hopefully Fulham get promoted.
Hes only 19 and just left their youth teams last season
That he needs a fricking cheese burgers.

We're not exactly stacked with midfielders.

Let's not make it sound like playing a single midfielder who is on the edge of being ready but may not be 100% ready will be the death of the USMNT. In the long-term it could very well be better for the USMNT even if the short term gives bumps.
The USMNT does not have world class midfielders. Bradley is a lock for one of the positions, but the other positions change every match. The opportunity cost of giving someone with a bright future an opportunity over Beckerman/Mix/Corona/Morales/Bedoya/Zusi is minimal.
If Hyndman was replacing someone that is a current star, then the conversation is different. The reality is our midfield is the definition of average with the current talent pool.

Playing both Zalalem and Hyndman at the same time would be a mistake for the first team. However, pair one of them up with Bradley and I am confident the captain can provide support and guidance on field.

You missed the point.
It's way too early in the cycle to expect anybody to be on the plane to Russia.
In 2011, no one knew who the frick Julian Green or Deandre Yedlin were and if you would've said that Brad Davis and Chris Wondolowski would play in a World Cup, you would've been laughed at.
So much shite can and will happen between now and May 2018, that it's insane to expect anyone, much less a kid, to make the squad.

Hyndman is the captain of the U-20s, so it is not 'insane' to expect him to make the roster in 2018. You are using extremes to try to make a point.
I hope CCV makes the roster in 2018 as well and he will only be ~20 when that day rolls around. The US needs to give the youth a chance because the guys currently on the squad will not do more than get you to the first knockout round. We can easily rotate a couple youngsters into our first team over the next few years and see how they perform. When you replace someone like Alverez with another CB, the relative risk is pretty darn low.
If the goal is to win the world cup eventually, then we need to invest behind the guys that can get us there (even if it means we take bruises in the short-term).

I would like to think (hope) that's what JK is doing. Hyndman is not ready for CONCACAF.

Ah, I see a sample size of 1 indicates future performance. Good to know Hyndman is doomed.

That's not what I'm saying... Just pointing out that your reasoning for Hyndman being an expectation for 2018 because he is the u-20 captain isn't fail-safe.

I mean, death is strong, but it could cost you crucial points. Friendlies, yeah, run him out. Anything else, I'm quite hesitant. There needs to be almost nothing on the line, unless he's shown at the club level he can handle it. I'm not familiar enough with Fulham's play of late to know if that's the case.

Hell... there were games in the U-20 WC where he and Zelalem were getting muscled off the ball.
