You're right, currently it's not a full proof solution, although it's a cheaper option for people who are content with only a few options. If you and a buddy agree to split cable then that's saving you both money.
It's only a matter of time though until sports are available through streaming without a cable subscription. Actually it's already begun with Sling. When that happens cable will be obsolete.
