I have asthma and COPD. The gets vacuumed everyday and shampooed several times a week.

Just pull it up. Even if you couldn't afford to replace with laminate or wood, the bare subfloor would be better for you.

Wow I can't imagine shampooing carpets several times every week. How much time do you spend doing this? Aren't your carpets basically constantly wet? Go with some type of hard surface and get your life back.

Wait, what? I didn't think carpets could sustain being shampooed so often. Aren't you destroying your carpet doing that?
