I love the way a black guy helping a white guy is some huge heartfelt story.

It appease them and panders to their sensibilities.

Mother of tap-dancing Jesus you're dumb
It's the fact that a man apart of a racist supremacist group is being helped out by a man of a race that group feels less about. The black officer in that moment obviously cared more about a fellow human being than what this guy's hateful organization stands for. And hopefully it changes the white guy's perspective somewhat.
It doesn't matter if the roles had been reversed--it would still be a great thing to see
