I haven't seen the movie yet but the last couple of Marvel movies have felt like that for me. Like nothing was at stake and Marvel was just like "hey it's a superhero on screen that will be in Avengers...just enjoy it."
The latest movie I've seen in the Marvel Universe is GotG, but I agree completely.
One of the reasons I matured from comics to novels is the fact that nothing of actual consequence actually happens to the main (moneymaker) character. The MCU has been very light hearted and has tread- close to the brink at times but ultimately very pussy-footedly - into territories that could change the whole concept of "superheroes"
When I was reading the comics as as a young teenager (young teen (YT)) I felt like there were actual stakes on the line. With the recent movies, especially beginning with GotG, I get the sense the are going the comic book route. Maybe I'm just mature and their target audience is a younger generation, but I refuse to accept that I am too old to "get it."
They are going for what's gonna put butts in the seat, but I'm about ready to give up on the MCU having any kind of cultural impact as far as having any kind odf meaningful advancing and complexing the "super-hero" meme- which they seem to have fully embraced.
I'll admit I am an X-Men die-hard fan so I kind of judge the whole "Universe" in regards to them- I know there are property rights issues- but I've been very disappointed with what I've seen so far- with the exception of "Thor: The Dark World".
I admit I haven;t watched any of "Daredevil" but I definitely feel like Marvel's character's in particular' need to be explored through a serial format.

Aside from Cap 2, which I loved, I've enjoyed the past 2 xmen movies more than any of the Marvel films. It's funny how it's always DC vs Marvel, but Fox seems to be getting better with their properties. I can't wait to see what they do with Deadpool.

I think Disney has a lot to do with this. I agree with OML that Whedon was probably forbidden from making Ultron truly evil like in the comics.

Yeah, especially since the final battle takes place in a completely made up city. I think that's bullshite. Ultron should have at least destroyed a major city like Rome, but I'm guessing Disney didn't like Ultron destroying any city, so they forced Whedon to make one up so no one would be offended.

I also think the outrage about Man of Steel was on their mind. You can tell they went out of their way to save people, to the point it was actually quite distracting. I never understood the criticism, these are films about superheroes there should be destruction and chaos.

You may be right, but there is a difference between the ultra-violence in Man of Steel and the ultra-violence that should have happened in Age of Ultron. MoS completely glosses over the fact that hundreds of thousands (if not a million plus) are being killed by Zod. This complete lack of self awareness cumulates when Zod tries to kill a family of 4 and Superman finally starts giving a shite. And then in the end Superman taunts the government for not being able to track him, right after he's largely responsible for their biggest and greatest city being blown straight to hell. It's simply ridiculous, because most people on the planet would be shaking in fear in their bedrooms after that.
Ultron on the other hand they shouldn't have beaten around the bush about it at all. Ultron should have been all around the world murdering people by the millions, and the Avengers would be almost powerless to stop him. And the Avengers would have to own up to it and be fricking horrified about the monster they created. The ultra-violence is justified in this situation. Watch this trailer (particularly the start) and tell me if you think that they weren't highly implying Ultron would level cities in seconds: LINK

I loved GotG and it was one of my favorite movies in years.

It isn't like he wasn't trying the whole time to stop Zod. He was fighting a group of supreme beings that were his equal.
But... I'll back out of the thread. Seems like every single comic book thread becomes MOS related.

I agree with you but I'd replace cap 2 with gotg, and I'd say that the last two xmen movies are closer to being full movies than anything marvel has made.

OP is wrong, movie was very enjoyable. The family liked, GoTG was better, but to say it was atrocious??? WTF Michael Pena was really good in limited screen time. Fun movie.

explain your reasoning.
I found the last 2 XMen movies to be terrible.

First Class and Days of Future Past were both great. Would probably make my Top 10 Superhero movies.

I don't think they are poorly made movies, just so we are clear. Just poor X-Men films.
I've found most of First Class to be cheesy, with the exception of Magneto killing Nazis.
DFOP had very low stakes.
Singer and Vaughn are good filmmakers without question,
but Singer beats you over the head with same themes since 2000 and also I'm tired of the same 3 characters getting the spotlight while other characters are pushed to the back.
I enjoyed The Wolverine.
I am looking forward to Deadpool.
but I would like to see a new voice in the X-franchise.

And I am honestly baffled why people like it. People in my theater were groaning and checking their watches. It seemed so cookie cutter and lacking in real passion and emotion. I just don't get it.

The last two men films were generally funny, treated their characters with respect, had real relationships, dealt with complex moral issues, had genuinely funny moments, and at the end of the day, the movies made m care.

This.
If anyone preferred Ant-Man to First Class or DoFP, they shouldn't be allowed to operate a vehicle or to be around children without supervision.

Uproxx has a funny review of Ant-Man as a Marvel assembly line film.
My favorite part:
My favorite part:

There’s also a lengthy Avengers tie-in starring Anthony Mackie as Falcon. The entire movie is essentially an extended Avengers featurette, and yet the only Avenger who actually shows up is Falcon. Now, even if you’re not as against tie-ins as I am, if you’re going to do one, couldn’t you at least get one of the characters who’s actually on the poster? Don’t name-drop “the cast of Friends” when you’ve only got Gunther the barista.

Like most reviews I've read on this movie, it's starts by complaining that Wright didn't direct this film and then insults Peyton Reed by inferring that he is a Yes Man to Marvel.
as posed by filmschoolrejects
quote:
This weekend a small group of people will come out of Ant-Man, thinking, “What would’ve Edgar Wright’s version been like?” What they should really be asking is, “What would’ve Peyton Reed’s Fantastic Four looked like?” Over a decade ago the director behind Ant-Man, Down with Love, and Bring it On was attached to helm the superhero movie at Fox, before Tim Story (Ride Along) stepped in to helm the forgettable 2005 film.

both films have terrible scenes in them and DFOP conflict can be solved with one statement by the time traveling Wolverine...."Hey Prof.X, if we fail, seek out Kitty Pryde when she is born and we will keep trying until we get it right."
