I liked the show. It was really slow and I gave up at first. But it ended up being worth it.
One thing I don't understand is all of the stuff about the will. Wouldn't the father have just left everything to his wife? She could have had her will leave to who ever she wanted then. There just wouldn't have been any drama about it then..

No, not necessarily. From what we can tell, he had pretty good sized estate. Often times real property will be split among the sons/daughters especially when they are adults. Had John, Kevin and Meg all been much younger, my guess is he would have granted the mother a life estate, but directing the property to go to his children upon her death. All of this is of course speculation over a fake estate but the father was portrayed as an old fashioned family man so I think he obviously wanted his kids to have the property/business.
