They've actually been moving fairly slowly and haven't really greatly expanded that much since their little blitzkrieg last year.

It would appear this is a smart approach though. The "legitimacy" of ISIS grows every day they exist and they are playing the long game. The game is to win more than you lose which is why they launch counter offensives immediately after set backs. The longer they hold the territory, the more they intertwine themselves into the fabric of society and put in roots.

Once they build a stable power base in their current territories, they can continually expand into more and more hostile areas with a more stable logistical supply chain as well.




I imagine long term though their leadership structure breaks down and some type of civil war occurs. Eventually there will be a disconnect between the local ISIS powers who are happy with what they have and the foreign + radical members who want expansion
