I'm in VA and am about 1.5 hours away from skiing, whitewater rafting and mountain biking

That's what interests me so much is the access to the mountains. Never lived so close to the mountains. I feel our quality of life would be better there too with the outdoor activity options. Cost of living in Winston(as the locals say) is really affordable too.

That's how it was for me when I first moved to AZ. I was mesmerized by all the mountains nearby. Right now it's hot as hell outside....but in the non summer months I can easily drive 15 minutes from my house and be hiking a trail. My husband can do the same and go mountainbiking when he gets off work.

We can drive 2 hours north into higher elevations and spend the day or go camping in the mountains with 80 degree highs/50 degree lows vs the 110-115 highs/90 degree lows right now in Scottsdale.

I would definitely do it if I were you. 1.5 hours away from the mountains is very nice. You can easily pull off day trips to go skiing, hiking, biking and rafting. It's a little bit of a gamble considering you dont have a job lined up yet but the job market in NC is strong.
