And in saying that, I knew Ole Miss and Miss St were being way overvalued after watching them against Alabama. I think a lot of the hate was because of them being ranked so high. Miss State didn't play ANYBODY.
The Mississippi teams bugged me all year, too. It was a good, tough division, but it wasn't head and shoulders better than the rest of the sport like many thought. The PAC 12 South was nearly its equal for most of the year outside of a terrible Colorado team.
I'll also say this about the PAC 12 - it was a difficult conference last year even while the two premier historical programs (USC and UW) had decent but not great teams. If those two get their thing going soon, watch out.
I'm not sure what to think of the SEC last year. I think the East was a little better than most were giving it credit, and I think the West was a little overrated. Georgia, in particular, was a weird team - they stomped some good teams (Clemson, Missouri, Louisville, Auburn, Arkansas) but also managed to get blasted by a bad Florida team and lose to a middling-ish South Carolina team. The GT loss was understandable - GT was playing absolutely lights out in the latter half of the season last year. I'm actually almost convinced a healthy and consistent UGA would have been the SEC's best shot at a title last year. You're right - it was a weird year, especially in the SEC.
As much as I despise the conference and hate most of their fans, I also think the Big Ten is poised for a bit of a rebound. Those schools have too much pride, too many resources, too large of fanbases, and too strong of a desire to win to stay as bad as they have been recently for long. They don't have the natural recruiting bases, but they'll figure out ways to get around that (like Dantonio and Meyer have) and compete. I think Penn State is probably in the middle of a long stretch of down years, and I don't see Franklin changing that much, but the rest of them want it bad enough to go and get it.

Georgia, aw man those guys. How do you lose to Florida like that? Adding to the weirdness was that GT loss. None of my ACC friends wann hear it but I swear Georgia looked like the far and away better team in that game. They fumbled at GT's 1 yard line twice I believe. And ahhhhh that squib kick at the end of the game Felt like the SEC did some great things but in the end they had some bizzare/amateur hour type games that left a bad feeling in everyone's mouth. Seemed like there was no leadership on otherwise talented teams.
ETA: I know we aren't being too nice to the Mississippi schools, but there wasn't anywhere to put them but at the top. Miss St. started 9-0 with wins over LSU, Auburn, aTm, and others. After week 11 they were 10-1 and the loss was at Alabama. I mean, putting them anywhere outside of the top 5 would have been fricked. Ole Miss started 7-0 I believe with a win over Alabama. At least it was fun while it lasted
