So I should look for the hotels listed as downtown? What is the magnificent mile?

North Michigan Avenue from the river to Oak Street. It's the Rodeo Drive of Chicago.

Lots of good suggestions here. I would add the outdoor concerts at the Ravinia Festival. Train from downtown lets you out at the gate. There's nothing like a concert under the stars.

Magnificent Mile is a strip with basically every store you can think of (pretty much an outdoor galleria) and good restaurants. It's where I would stay before I moved here.

Theatre district and downtown are both good
