What is the magnificent mile?
North Michigan Avenue from the river to Oak Street. It's the Rodeo Drive of Chicago.
Lots of good suggestions here. I would add the outdoor concerts at the Ravinia Festival. Train from downtown lets you out at the gate. There's nothing like a concert under the stars.

The Chicago Reader is a good place to find what's happening in the city. Either pick up a copy when you arrive or check it out on-line HERE.

So I should look for the hotels listed as downtown? What is the magnificent mile
Magnificent Mile is a strip with basically every store you can think of (pretty much an outdoor galleria) and good restaurants. It's where I would stay before I moved here.
Theatre district and downtown are both good
