Box is wired, but have tried connecting to wifi too. Speed test showing wifi @ 50mb. All the dam apps on the fire TV are slow & buffering. Have always had this problem with a couple apps (mlbtv & hbogo). Now genesis is doing it too. Can't even watch a movie because it buffers every 30 seconds. what could the problem be...besides Amazon fire tv box sucks arse? Have no trouble with my apple tv

Have you tried rebooting it ? Sometimes after heavy use for a few days mine will get laggy and that usually solves it.

My wifi download speeds are normally 25-30 mbps where my FireTV box sits. I've never had an issue with any of the apps you're referencing...it's actually amazingly fast. I've had issues with ESPN app taking a long time to load at times, but I think it's more the app than the box because I've experienced the same issue on my pc as well. It doesn't make much sense, but I've read that some people have had better results using the box wireless that wired...which I see you already tried.
For Genesis, I sometimes have issues with newer programming. Last night I was trying to watch the new episode of True Detective and had a hard time finding a good stream...it is more from the servers being overwhelmed than your internet speeds. I switched to an episode of Orange is the New Black from the first season (just started watching...pretty funny) and had no issues in 720p.
My only guess, if it's not due to the apps themselves, as to the problems you are experiencing is that you may have received a bad box...talk to Amazon before giving up on the box...it's a great product, especially if you use Kodi/XBMC. I wouldn't be surprised if they overnighted you a new one...at least then you would know for sure that it's the box not your internet or connection.
Another note on the apps...I think companies have underestimated the adaptation of streaming and their servers are often overwhelmed as well (espn, HBO, Starz, mlb, Sling, etc.). Companies that have been built specifically for streamers (NetFlix, Prime, Hulu) don't seem to have these issues which leaves me to believe that we still have a ways to go before receiving a flawless streaming experience.

Reboot not only your Ftv box but also your router. I have to reboot both every couple of days and it does fix a lot of buffering issues. And as others have said, some streams are just slow. Also, most cable company routers are crap. I have set my Time Warner router as a Bridge and let my Linksys router do the DNS serving. If that doesnt help, call Ftv support. I'm sure they will have you do a factory re-set
