This. How is this even up for debate?!?!
Dottie wasn't even going to play in the championship, but her competitive nature got the best of her. And in the final at bat when she got the hit, she realized that winning this game would mean nothing to her long term, but it would likely ruin her sisters life. So at the end, when Kit rounded third, Dottie saw an opportunity to do the right thing.
I mean, the knowing glance she gives Jimmy when she walks off the field, Jimmy knew there's no way she freaking drops that ball on accident. Pretty sure Penny Marshall has said she dropped it on purpose too.
