How does this compare to prior years? Baseball has always had a more casual fanbase and should not be compared to the other sports (especially football). Outside of a handful of teams, most programs don't see more than 5k fans a game.
The biggest issue w/ the CWS this year, is it seams to be dragging out compared to prior years. Plus, if they really wanted to increase viewership, they would actually promote it better. Even though the games are on ESPN, you very rarely see updates on SportsCenter about the games. Also, the individual sports pages (ESPN, CBS Sports, yahoo sports, bleacher report, etc.) do not advertise college baseball, and you usually have to dig through the back pages to find any information (which is almost always a year old) about the sport itself.
