I use it for anything I don't want coming to my work email. I live outside the US so I use messaging services or personal email to stay in touch with people back home.

I don't use my work email for anything personal. Helps because when I go on vacation I can turn it off and not be bothered.

And I have a friend that got rid of his cell phone and the only way I can reach him is through email.
NSA can track through email just as easy as they can through cell phones.

Occasionally. We have a couple different groups set up that we all reply to. And I'll email certain people that I know don't text. It is good for announcement type things. And calendar entries to your phone.

It's primarily used for kids' school stuff, their sports, etc.
I also still use it as a small document repository for redundancy(just a few word and pdf docs).
But to answer OP. I RARELY send an email to someone like "hey what's up"

For anything other than organizing what bar we're going to or talking about a game in progress, i'd prefer an email to a text.

IMO texts are better for very short messages (often related to logistics, such as where to meet, etc).
Emails are better for short to medium length discussion, and if you have to write more than a sentence or two it is better to use the keyboard on your computer than talking to the phone or using the swype keyboard.
Phone calls are better for long discussion.
Face to face is best.
