Their first party games are amazing, and each of them has a pretty big following that absolutely sells their console - but they can't come out with them fast enough to actually sell enough systems - less install base, means companies like FROM Software or Eidos / SE don't want to do exclusive games for them... because they will never be able to port the games over to anything else + the install base just isn't big enough to justify the creation of the game.
It's a catch 22, Nintendo is hurting, and the naming scheme for the WiiU didn't do them ANY justice this generation

The trend started with the N64 really. They pissed a lot of people off when they were top dog and then once Sony came around and offered another platform people didn't have to take their shite anymore. They never really adjusted after that.
