I think BB was more plot driven than character driven.
I do agree with you that some of the stuff in the first half of season 5 was awful. The train robbery was the worst.

While the 2nd watch is highly enjoyable, and almost comparable, I see no way one could enjoy the 2nd watch as much as the 1st because of the lack of anticipation.
No series has had me on the edge of my seat and wondering what happens next quite like this one.
Case in point, Schrader in the parking lot with the twins and their axes.
