What is a good, quality cigar for a beginner to start on?
I would suggest buying a few samplers and going that route. That is a cheap way to figure out what you like, although the selection will be meh.
Another suggestion would be to go to a cigar shop with an educated tobacconist and explain that you want to try 4-5 sticks from a variety of blends/strengths. This will be more expensive, but you will get a better idea as to what you really like, and it will be a more pleasurable experience...
Must try cigars when starting out:
Fuente Double Chateau - not an OMG cigar, but it is a fine introduction into cigar smoking, and very reasonably priced.
Ashton VSG - Amazing stick, will give you an idea what the top of the line cigars are like. Perfect roll, perfect burn, perfect balance of complex flavors.
Padron 26 Maduro - Another amazing stick and a top of the line cigar. This is one of the finest maduros ever made and it will give you an idea of what a maduro is supposed to me.
Quorum - a shitty shitty stick. It is everything you want to avoid, but you should smoke one to know the difference.
La Flor Dominicana Oro - very nice mid range stick that will give you an idea about cigar range. Chocolates and peppers galore.
Acid (your choice) - I cannot stand infused, but you should smoke one and come to your own conclusions.
a cameroon wrapped stick (Fuente Hemmingways are a good choice) This is a creamy stick, expands your palate into different tastes.

I recently ordered a sampler pack of Gurkhas and was totally disappointed. Substandard roll to the point of being unenjoyable.
Not a fan of Gurkha at all.

I have found that Gurkhas are hit or miss. I've had several that I thought were good and others that were decent but I would not buy again.
FTR- I had a Mon O War armada last night with the Dalmore to wash it down. Both were incredible!
