how does the tax situation work? Does it matter who does the financing?
Thanks.
Thanks.

pay the taxes when you register the car in AL. I did it in October you don't need a bill of sale. You need the title signed by both parties and a photo copy of their id.

Are you buying from a dealership or private party?

dealership...sorry, should have noted that.

They'll take care of it for you...just make sure they have the correct tax rate for your address. Mine wanted 9.5% vs. the 9.0% that it should have been. I know it may not be but $100...more the principle than anything.

auto tax rates are lower, though, right?

No. Not in EBR at least...

Louisiana's 4 percent sales tax is charged to you at the time of purchase. Baton Rouge also adds an additional 2 percent city tax. You are also responsible for paying a tax to the parish (county) where you register the car, ranging from 1.85 to 5 percent. These taxes are based on the vehicle's MSRP.

where is that from?

I can't find it...care to share the link?

Never heard of that...I'm about 99% sure I've paid 9% on all three vehicles I've purchased that have been registered in Louisiana.

I think you're getting screwed if so, pal.

Just looked paid 9% on all 3. Two from dealership, the other was private party and I paid 9% of the FMV at the DMV when I registered the vehicle.

Youre right. Sales tax on a vehicle is the same as if you'd buy any normal item. Tax rate is based on your address.
