What is your experience with all inclusive resorts in Mexico?

What are your recommendations for all inclusive resorts in Mexico? I've never been, but one of the guys in the office went to Playa Mujeres, Excellence last year and said it was great. For those that have been, or been multiple times, which do you consider the best value?
Will be traveling with 3 other couples, no kids.
What are some excursion recommendations? Any good fishing charters?
TIA

None all inclusive have crappy food, watered down drinks and Wal Mart vacationers.

Riu has some amazing properties in Mexico. I've had great experiences with the food and alcohol. Riu palace peninsula is the last one I went to and I'd go back in a heartbeat.

I'm going in 2 weeks so I'll give my review after that

thanks, I will have to check that out. It is better than a cruise ship right?

I'm not a fan of all inclusive because I like to get out and explore. All inclusive will keep you at the resort the entire time unless you want to pay additional for meals you have already paid for.
That said, I stayed at Now Sapphire in Puerto Morales in December and it was great. I was there for Closer to the Sun so I didn't mind the all inclusive as I wasn't leaving the resort anyway. Beach was nice, water wasn't as clear as I expected.
If you're into diving, the reef is right there. We took a boat right off the beach and straight out to the reef. Again, visibility wasn't what I hoped for, but it could have been the time of year too. I was on Isla Mujeres 2 days prior and the water there was pristine and it's only a few miles away.
All in all, we had a great time. Food was comparable to a cruise, nothing great. Drinks were good and the bar tenders poured well. They didn't have Crown, but they did have Johnny Walker.

great info! Were you snorkeling or diving with tanks? Did you need to take some pre-dive lessons?

Hell yes... it's a totally different experience. You aren't "trapped" at the all inclusive. That's a ridiculous notion.

We are staying at the Hideaway at Royalton Riviera
It's an adults only portion of a larger resort. It just opened this year and reviews are all over the place but the consensus is that it's very nice. I've seen very few complaints about food and beverage.

good to hear. One of the comments from another poster said food and drinks suck and it's like walmart for vacationer, which sounds like a cruise.

Was just coming to post this. If you are going without kids, this is the best resort around. Just went in March.

I've been to one near cancun. It wasn't all that I thought it was cracked up to be. It was a mid-tier resort in quality. Food was pretty meh and the drinks are all light on the liquor. I had to tip before-hand and tell them to put a shite ton of liquor in my drinks to get anything decent. I personally enjoyed going into one of the nearby towns and eating / hanging out there than the resort. Though the beach is nice at the resort.

We were diving with tanks, only went down 1 atmosphere so about 35 to 40 feet. Most places will offer an intro or beginner dive for people who aren't certified. You will have to sit through a 30 minute or so course then do your test in the water. Once you check good on that and the instructor knows you aren't going to flip out once you get under, you get to dive. They can't take you deep though, you likely won't go past 1 atmosphere.

I remember going to the Moon Palace Cancun years ago, and I liked it. I was young, but it seemed cool. But I'm just not into all-inclusives as an adult, since you don't see the country, just the resort.

No, you're not "trapped". However, for a lot of people, it does create the feeling of needing to stay close. If a family is traveling, they tend to get the feeling they are wasting money if they have to eat out when they have a meal already paid for at the resort. Some don't care, most seem to.

I am going to Valentin Imperial Maya tomorrow for vacation. Very good prices and my in-laws have stayed there twice and loved it.
