There's plenty of evidence that he had turned against the war, and was vocal about it to his fellow Soldiers. The theory is that once he returned to the states would have been a strong voice against it, so he was killed. That's a little too black helicopterish for me to take at face value, but the government's covering up the fact that he was killed by friendly fire adds fuel to conspiracists.
