Yes. They were the 1st casualties.
We all grew up together (Heady's brothers) with his older brother in the Marines, my older and younger brothers in the Marines and myself in the Navy.

I'm an older guy who thinks it was caused by a hot run torpedo.
Also, lol at the a-gangers.

Thanks for sharing Terd. I was close friends with a guy on the BTR (SSN-689) and him telling me about the collision they had. Repair exceeded the cost of keeping it active.

First sub I served on was the USS Sculpin (SSN-590) as a Nuclear Machinist. As a whole .. served on the SSN-590, SSBN-735, SSN-683, SSBN-738, AS-39 and 2 tours as an Instructor on the MTS-626. Ended up doing 20 years and 11 months before retiring as an E-8.

Did 2 years on that pig. I have some friends that were stationed there with me in LaMadd that are back visiting the island right now. A lot has changed since the ESL left.

You know how much kitchen duty I had after boot camp as a Nuke?
Majority of nukes on any boat I'd been on, when they would eventually crawl out of their holes, were weird as frick and probably the most socially awkward people in the Navy. But they're usually pretty smart so you gotta take the bad with the good I guess

About 3/4s of them were the typical awkward types you knew in HS.
I didn't hang out with those guys.

Some of them were cool though... but most of them were dorks.
Back in the early days when I was standing Aux Aft I used to hate having to go to maneuvering. You never knew wtf those weirdos would be doing in there.
Once I remember walking up to the door and I could see that the lights were out. I opened the door and all of a sudden there's this reddish glow. One of the nukes (a cool one) had his nutsack stretched out to cover the entire front of a battle lantern. He was waiting for me to show up so he could turn it on.

I would have whipped his arse... scrawny little bastard.
One of my NUBs was a tiny little fricker with a chip on his shoulder... called him Chickenhawk after the character from Looney Toons.
During his first underway the nuke ETs started fricking with him and he was huffing and puffing about how bad he wanted to fight them. I talked him into going into their bunkroom, taking all their shoes, and tying all the laces together into a big knot.
He made a ball of about 15 pairs of shoes and boots, threw it in the middle of their bunkroom, turned on the light, and said "YOU BITCHES WANNA frick WITH ME NOW?!"
That shite brought a tear to my eye... I realized that I had raised him right and I knew he was ready to be his own A-ganger.
