What he's saying is that a scope turned down to 1x power is about the same as a red dot since there is no magnification. I think his justification is good and I agree with him - simpler is better.
But in the end it's obviously your call. This is 'Merica anyway...

About the same except for the long eye relief and parallax free optics which is the main reason you want a red rot over a scope.
