Unless I missed something, the people in Metairie were shot by a lone gunman. The girlfriend was cruising the street in the stolen Highlander.
He saw the garage and kitchen doors both open, retrieved his shotgun and then went into the house. They had been burglarizing unlocked cars in the neighborhood, when he saw the open door.

Having the house with "wealthier looking" individuals burglarized in Gentily seems pretty straight up to me. I dont need some CSI conspiracy to make sense of it
