Away goals rule

What do you guys think about the away goals rule?
I personally think it is lame. Why not have OT/shootout if aggregate is tied after both legs?
If Real Madrid had won 1-0 today it would have been a pretty lame way to decided a semi-final of the biggest annual tournament. It seems very arbitrary to me.

I like it (but I'm very much so in the minority). Statistically, soccer has the greatest win% of any sport in regard to the home team. Its much harder for an away team to win a game, unlike almost all of the other sports. For that reason alone, I like the rule.

It suits the sport very well on a lot of levels. It's not lame at all.

Statistically, home advantage is worth half a goal (source: Soccernomics).
Before the rule was put in place, the away team always bunkered and never attacked. This gives some incentive for the away team to attack, which opens up the game a bit.

This is the main (and best) reason. It makes for more entertaining games.
But also, what are the other options? Penalties are exciting but don't really represent the game itself very well. It's not too far removed from settling a tied basketball game with a free throw competition.
And just having a sudden death overtime (like Americans who bring this up are used to) doesn't work either because of the nature of the sport. With scoring at a premium combined with the high aerobic nature of the game you'd see these overtimes become really unwatchable, really fast. Teams would just hunker down and wait for the other side to tire out. It would go on forever and be the least exciting soccer imaginable. Eventually players would be cramping up all over the place and it would descend into farce.
The away goal rule is the perfect solution. It maintains the integrity of the competition and at the same time encourages entertaining play.

But the away goal rule, while it encourages the away team to attack, also encourages the home team to park the bus after they have scored a goal. Or if the first leg was a 1-1 draw, the home team in the second leg would want to stall out for a 0-0 draw.

Teams don't really do that at home and besides if a team is attacking and you just park the bus you're going to spend most of the game in your zone. Maybe you get your 0-0 but then you have to go on the road for the 2nd leg which is a disadvantage.

Good point. I can't think of an alternative that makes sense.

If people are agreeing with DS you know the op sucks

I don't mind the away goal rule for the regular 90 mins of each leg. I hate it when teams are tied on aggregate and it goes to extra time.

Fukk that. It forces the 2nd game host team to attack in the first leg.

Next the OP is going to tell us that the EPL needs to decide its champion via playoff

CL has the perfect format for deciding games.
