Which rod are you buying? And yes, it gets expensive very quickly.

I'm not sure yet. I have an Allen Alpha III reel 8 wt.
I know I want a 9' 8wt. rod and I was looking at some Orvis rods but I'm open to suggestions.

Another good resource in BR is Larry Offner. He owns the Green Trout Fly Shop by Jubans. (Green trout =bass). Great guy and locally owned. Also owns the warm fly forum I believe.
I mentioned to my wife I wanted to start tying a few years back. For Xmas that same year she bought me the deluxe Orvis tying kit ($4-$500). I didn't tell her she could get all of the same stuff online for much much cheaper.

TFO
Temple fork outfitters. Try them both out but for the money and warranty TFO is awesome.

Get a BVK. It casts just as well if not better than the Helios 2 and it's 1/4 the price.

I was actually just looking at the BVK. Seems like that's what everyone suggests so I might be going that route.

Love mine and would recommend to anyone. TFO warranty can not be beaten imo
EDIT: TFO rods are known to not come with a rod tube so you'll have to get one. If you don't want to spend big bucks on one you can do what I do - just use pvc pipe and cap it with those slip on round caps or screw in style. I prefer the slip on ones. To make it more personal I buy a sticker for every new stream/fly shop I visit and slap it on the PVC. Costs me bout $5 per rod tube. I now have stickers from all over CO, PA, NY, and NC.

I'm gonna pick one up from Bass Pro on my way back to BR.
What do yall use for your leaders and tippet?

I have this little kit - LINK
Large selection of fly materials at BPS and Cabelas. I tie with this in my lap in the recliner. Not a fancy setup, but it does what I want. Have fun!

That all depends what type of fish you're after and what type of conditions you're fishing them in.
For marsh reds I stick with a mono leader (it floats) and a foot or so of fluoro tippet (it sinks, but not too deep). If I'm fishing really skinny then I stick with all mono.

The only thing I will add here that not all may agree with is Fluoro brand - I've had too many quality fish break off with the likes of Berkley vanish. It's Seaguar brand or nothing for me. I have no experience with their monofilament though.
I use Rio powerflex tapered mono leaders for trout. 9ft if I'm working bigger streams and clear water, 7 ft for the small streams. Usually toss a bit of fluoro tippet on the end of them.

For leaders I just buy whatever and then add a good quality tippet material. I use loop to loop on the tippets as flouro can cut mono if they're both small.
Also agree that Seaguar is really good. I also have a bund of spools of Orvis brand tippet material.
Lastly, once you get pretty proficient at trout and saltwater flies, give deer hair bas and saltwater flies a run. They are so neat to tie and fish with.
Lastly, most often when tying less is more. Use less materials than you think you will need. I also use the absolutely smallest thread I can get away with.

Nice rod dude. I've always preferred the axiom and mangrove rods over the BVK for just about every specides besides bonefish.

That's good to hear.
Basspro didn't have a 9' BVK and the Axiom was sitting right there and it felt awesome so I went with it.

I don't know why but I'm in the same boat.
Not to derail the thread too much but I've been shopping for a 5 wt set up...any suggestions? Trying to keep it under $400.

It's hard for me to comment on a 5wt because I don't own one. It's the only weight rod I do not currently own. However I did cast my friends TFO finesse 7'9" 5wt the other day and it was awesome. If I were to buy another 5wt I would start with that TFO finesse rod.
5wt's are tricky. For me the 5wt filled a gap that I didn't need filled. 3wt's made panfish and spotted bass more fun and a 6wt did a better job slinging big flies for large mouth bass. I didn't need a rod to do both, which is what the 5wt would have been.
For what it's worth, everyone I know with a BVK 5wt says it would better rod if they sold it as a 6wt .

Axioms are sick. My good friend throws one. The BVK is a much better rod in the wind though. I feel like Axioms need to be overlined to handle wind well.
Sweet reel. I've got an Allen too.
I have a Sage 5wt with a Battenkill on it that's really awesome for bass. It's a little much for perch though.
