re: Kendall Wright and Justin Hunter show disappointment after the Mariota selection

quote:
Wright shakes his head a bit after the announcement while Hunter sits down in a chair, but Wright says that the outside read on his reaction is incorrect. He said any resignation on Hunter’s behalf is because he lost a bet to Wright about what the pick would be and that his own reaction was subdued because he’d always assumed Mariota would be the guy. “I have no reason to be upset,” Wright said, via the Tennessean. “Me personally, I have nothing against Marcus Mariota. I have nothing against the pick. Period.
This makes a ton of sense.

Has there been this much debate over an LSU alum's job security to prove himself a #1 QB when another QB has been drafted vs. competition with the presumed backup (Charlie Whitehurst)? I'll wait for the season to play out before calling Mariota worthless but if they traded back, what's to say they would've gotten him 5, 10, 15 spots later on?
The problems with TN go well beyond one or two draft picks. Granted, they could've done something more impactfucl in trading the pick, instead of drafting Mariota. This team is essentially a 3-year draft process/project away from seeing any kind of progress made. And who was the consensus #3 QB in this draft, Bryce Petty? The immobility of Mett can be balanced with Mariota. Doesn't mean either experiment is going to work. Don't draft a QB and you're in deep shite for another year if Mett gets crushed back there. There's no instant improving this team through one draft. Doesn't matter who their QB is this year.
