I got out of the movie about an hour or so ago. It was an average film. I gave it a C.

Me too. My problem with the whole Avengers is that the threat never really feels real. Does anybody ever doubt that they won't get the job done? Or that one of the heroes will die?
The robots that Ultron controls break apart at the drop of a hat. Ultron himself was cool (thanks to James Spader) but his whole plan was to lift a square mile patch of city above the earth and drop it? Come on.
Let's be honest here, Thor and Hulk alone could've handled Ultron, probably just Hulk. And Scarlet Witch could've been used as the main villain. Her mind control was much more effective than anything Ultron did.
If Thanos doesn't wreck shite and kill Black Widow, Hawkeye, or any of the main superheroes in the next ones I'll be severely let down.

quote:The problem is that Ultron was created in the first place. Stark is smart enough to know that it's a frickin stupid idea to build something that powerful when you have no idea wtf will happen after he's created. He did it without even consulting anyone but Banner? That was BS. After watching it a second time, I looked to see if he was being controlled by Scarlet Witch. It was just stupid. And then he creates another one!? Thank God that one worked out.
I haven't even seen the movie, don't care about spoilers, but just from watching the trailers he has said that he was made to save the world and the only way to accomplish that is to get rid of humans. I thought that would be known, but like I said I haven't watched the movie.

quote:OK. Tony started the process in building Ultron. It was his intention to finish the process. Whether he finished it himself or not, that was his intention.
And lastly.. He didn't actually create Ultron. They were starting to experiment with it and run programs to see how they could make it work. When they left and went to the party the soul gem created ultron itself and killed Jarvis (or so we thought).
quote:So instead he almost causes the world to end himself? The Tony Stark I remember is smarter than that.
he believed he had to do it now or the world would end.

And Stark never faces the consequences of his actions. He creates Ultron, wrecks the shite out of a major city, and then risks it all by creating another piece of AI that (thankfully) works.
The main problem with Age of Ultron is that the film seemed to be more of a launching pad for Captain America: Civil War and Infinity Wars.
Ultron was a very crappy villain. I have never seen so much buildup for a character only to see that character fall flat in all my life. Scarlet Witch was easily more powerful than Ultron. She should have been the one behind it all, not Ultron. It would have played on the puppet motif.

I rather enjoyed it. Whedon is at his best in small, personal moments, and this movie has a real cool hangout vibe. The best scene in the entire film is the party after taking out Hydra, and all of the Avengers showing off and cutting loose. And the aftermath of the party, with them drunkenly trying to lift Thor's hammer made it feel like these were actual people (and, in true Whedon fashion, this scene set up a much bigger reveal later on).
I did like that they gave Hawkeye something to do, but if he has a farmhouse, wife, and two kids, we ain't getting a Fraction-based Hawkguy movie. BOOOOOOOO!!!!
Scarlet Witch was well set up, Quicksilver was not. He dies so she can experience character growth, so, I guess fridging works the opposite way now. That's not really progress.
I think Stark setting up Ultron is actually well-established by his character in the previous 3 solo films and the Avengers. He's an arrogant douchebag. The rules don't apply to him, and he still doesn't feel like they do. He knows he'll get the AI is a bad idea lecture from everyone, so he end rounds them and does it by himself. He's an individualist. He's a narcissist. I don't get the criticism this was out of character. It was nothing but within his character.
I liked the Hulk-Widow shipping because it shows the filmmakers could deviate from the source and instead go by actual chemistry of the actors. ScarJo and Ruffalo have better chemistry than with Renner (and it establishes her as the Work Wife).
Ultron was the first good villain since Loki. And his final confrontation with Vision felt earned. Also, the easter egg'ed the Vision/Scarlet Witch relationship. Or maybe I read too much into it.
And I do like the idea of people retiring. There's been much speculation at the next Avengers, and they already unveiled it. Didn't see that coming.
Fun movie. Not as great as, say, Winter Soldier. But it was definitely a fun 2.5 hours.

quote:See, the problem I have with it is he has acted like that in a fun and playful manner, but never when the world is on the line. It's way out of character for him. Not only that, but he's making stupid decisions. That is unlike him.

ETA: You should go back and watch the first one.

He was also very much humbled by the events of the first Avengers movie, as Iron Man 3 explored. By the end of Iron Man 3, he not only seemed like a different Tony Stark, he also hinted that he was no longer Iron Man.
First scene of Age of Ultron, the first time we have seen him in almost 2 years, he's back in action as Iron Man.
Age of Ultron completely ignored Tony Stark's character development.

He's always made... not exactly stupid, but selfish decisions. And he absolutely has tried to work on his lonesome, and has chafed against the concept of the team. In fact, even early dialogue in this film shows he resents Cap's leadership position when Stark has all of the money and tech.
He's been looking for a way out of the superhero racket. Which is why War Machine exists.

Then you misread the ending of IM3. The ending of that film is that TONY STARK IS IRON MAN, which is why he destroys the multiple clones of his armor. He's losing his humanity to the suit. This fell in perfectly with the ending of Iron Man 3, as well as his struggles with the Chturi Invasion. He's still obsessed with that horrible moment. It drives his decisions in the first half of this film (and all of IM3).

quote:Maybe, but there in lies the problem I have with his character at this point. It's not who he started out to be. And War Machine is controlled by his friend, not a strange, unknown AI program. Oh.........and he's making stupid arse decisions like building a super robot that could kill them all.

Well, he didn't mean to make a murderbot. But we're talking about a guy who said "I'm privatizing world peace." He clearly feels that his judgment is better than anyone else's, which is how he constantly runs into trouble. Every single Iron Man film has started with Tony be himself: a selfish jerk (opening monologue in IM, the trade show in IM2, farming out his robots to deal with Pepper in IM3) and slowly realizing he can't do that. It's a lesson he has to learn over and over again. If you can't see Tony Stark as a selfish character, I don't know how to help you. They don't keep it a secret. It's not even subtext.
Besides, focusing on Tony Stark misses the real character they don't know what to do with: Thor. WTF was that stuff in the pool? Why does he essentially say "I'm going to leave this movie for 30 minutes to set up my next sequel no one really wants"? The movie knows what to do with Cap and Iron Man. It's lost with Thor.
And as a comic geek, did anyone else notice that they essentially set up Vision to be Adam Warlock in the Infinity War?

So, essentially, your objection to the film is that you don't like a characterization of Tony Stark that has been well-established in the prior four films? Okey dokey.
Maybe they'll ask you to write the sequel.
