What do you all think of District Donuts in New Orleans? I thought they were pretty amazing albeit different/hipsterish and not your usual standard donut.
They were hands down the best doughnuts I have ever had and are contention for being the best breakfast I have ever consumed. I've already planned to stop by the next time I venture down to New Orleans.

Mr. Ronnies in Houma
Most people tend to favor the original location. I have visited the Baton Rouge branch twice now and I am very conflicted about my overall opinion.
On the one hand, it's some of the most well-priced doughnuts you will ever find. And on the other hand, those damn cake doughnuts are so coated in glaze and sugar that you are liable to wind up in a diabetic coma just after eating two. I will say that their yeast doughnuts are pretty damn good.

but don't even get me started on Mr. Ronnie's -- those things are like rocks. I feel like I've eaten a lead weight smothered in glaze every time I make the mistake of eating one.
I made the mistake of ordering a dozen as part of a cheat/re-feed day...worst mistake of my life. I got 12 different doughnuts (around five cake and seven yeast) and I wanted to kill myself after the first round of six.

Best donuts ever are in the Magnolia/El Dorado, Arkansas, area. Spudnuts. Made with potato flour.
I remember the Food Network did a special on potatoes and talked extensively about the versatility of potato flour.
The stopped at a spudnut shop in Idaho and those things looked divine.

This. I have never cared for cake donuts.
Cake donuts are the honey dew or candy corn of the bakery world. I swear I have never met someone in person who eats eats any of these foods, yet they are still for sale. How is it possible?!

They offer a cake-like doughnut which I don't like. I'm also not in to putting a bunch of toppings or fillings in there either which is pretty much everything @ District. I know people love them but they seem a little too trendy for my taste. Just fry a light doughnut and put some glaze on it.
bullshite. I've had cake doughnuts before and District is nothing like a cake doughnut. I'm sorry you don't care for a creative filling or topping on your doughnuts, but they are a welcome change from the usual, run-of-the-mill glazed and chocolate glazed options.

Nothing like Shipleys....
the "chocolate filled one" will do me in one day...
so glad I live miles from a Shipley's

I agree with this. I was really disappointed in the Ronnie's in BR after hearing all the hype about them.
I tend to agree with this having read the hype and finding it a let down. I will say I loved the maple/bacon eclair at Ronnie's. It was heaven and probably 2000+ calories.

Annnnnnd this is what I'm talking about. People are apeshit for this place. What they serve is a huge, dense, dry, baked doughnut with a ton of toppings and fillings. They have the market cornered if you're looking for a doughnut with Nutella on it or all the fixings for a banana split. That's just not what I'm looking for when I want doughnuts. A girl at work brings them every Friday. Every doughnut is the exact same dough flavor with different toppings. I think she said a dozen runs her something like $30. That's just silly.

If I can time travel, McKenzie's Buttermilk Drops (the Tastee-produced ones are good, but not the same). If I can't time travel, Antoine's makes a suitable successor.

Ok so is TatoNut in Ocean Springs still in business or not?

Eat one of their filled doughnuts and you'll swear you just consumed a sugar-glazed boulder.

McKenzies Buttermilk Drops
Try Wink's Buttermilk Drop bakery. He starred in the film 'Beasts of the Southern Wild' and his buttermilk drops are fantastic.
