The case for trading up: 9 picks, only 5 or 6 drafted players will be useful...

I wanted to make the title "Only 5 or 6 drafted players will make the team," but I don't feel like checking if all of these guys technically were on the roster at any point:
2014: 6 draft picks, Khairi Fortt and Tavon Rooks never saw the field and were not part of the roster at the end of the season.
2013: 5 picks, 4 made the team. Rufus Johnson (6th round) never saw the field.
2012: 5 picks, Andrew Tiller (6th) and Marcel Jones (7th) never saw the field. Though I could have sworn Jones got a smidge of playing time for us, NFL and ESPN sites say no.
2011: 6 picks, Greg Romeus (7th) and Nate Bussey (7th) never saw the field.
2010: 5 picks. Everyone made the team. I don't believe that Matt Tennant (5) or Sean Canfield (7) ever played, though.
That means that, on average, only 4 drafted players will make the team. And it's not like we're a bad drafting team, Loomis/Payton were either 3rd or 4th in terms of % of Pro Bowlers drafted. While I don't think that we should necessarily use our early picks to move up to the top of the draft, I think that it makes a lot of sense to use one of our thirds or one (or both) of our fifths to move up to get the guys that we want in the late first to early 3rd rounds. It makes no sense for us to draft 9 players, so at the very least we should do something like trade one of our 2015 picks for a 2016 pick.

We all did, locotiger. We all did.

I had high hopes for Martez Wilson. I thought he was going to be a beast.

And a case for placing less value on those 5-7th round picks than most teams: we're arguably the best in the NFL at finding UDFA's that can contribute. About a billion RBs, Juneyah, and Bush come to mind.

Late round picks generally don't make the team, they don't bring back much in trades either.

Sure. But let's say 5 drafted players make the team (one more than average). 4 of them will be from the first 3 rounds. 5th round draft picks do have value and the odds say that one of them won't make the team. That's why I think one or both of those two fifs should be used to move up, even if it's just from 75 to the mid 50's to get a guy like Anthony.

Which is why no Saints fan should want Randy Gregory. Similar body type. Similar strengths & weaknesses.

I'm not a huge fan of Gregory's, but him and Tez aren't comparable. Gregory had a lot more production, plus they played different positions. IIRC, Illinois did play 3-4, so Tez occasionally played on the outside, but he rarely played with a hand down like Gregory.

I didn't realize that the Dolphins only gave up a second rounder to move up from 12 to 3 in order to snag Dion Jordan. Wish we could have done that last year to move up a little farther, instead of wasting a second round pick on SJB.

Martez wasn't much of pass rusher at Illinois.

Obviously he wasn't in Gregory's league, but I could have sworn that Tez was an ILB in Illinois's 3-4 D. He probably didn't get many pass rushing opportunities.
Regardless, just because they have similar physical builds is a ridiculous reason to avoid Gregs.

A 3-4 outside linebacker with the length, toughness and closing burst to immediately help a run defense. Gregory could stand to add more weight to his frame and needs plenty of technique work and a patient coach for his pass-rush skill to match his traits. Gregory's draft stock has been clouded with a positive drug test at the combine to go with failed tests for marijuana while at Nebraska. High-ceiling, low-floor prospect.

Wilson is a pretty impressive physical specimen with good measurables. Probably projects best as a strong side outside linebacker in a 4-3. At that position, should be able to hold outside contain using his long arms and strength to keep tight ends off his body against the run, and jam at the line or pressure the quarterback in passing situations. Is susceptible to good ball handling and doesn't show good awareness dropping into coverage. Has character flags and endurance has been questioned. However, Wilson's frame, straight-line speed, and upside will likely entice a franchise to select him on Day 2.
Randy Gregory
Martez Wilson

Which isn't even close to what Gregory does.

Are we putting Wilson and Gregory in the same sentence?
Posted on 4/26/15 at 8:33 pm to THRILLHO
It is why they need to let the head scouts do the draft.look how good they do with the rookie UFDA players. With the lack of depth picks 13th-31st-44th-75th-78th----- should within two years all be starters-- an 148th-154th picks should make the 53 roster an be good back ups.187th an 230th should be the only picks that should be long shots to make roster----an they should be on the practice squad. Also picks 187th-230th They should crack the 53 roster next year..No more long shots like wasted picks like Marcel Jones let the scout who found Leito call the picks.

I love how you just completely chose to ignore all the other info. Anyway, Wilson was given his chance as a 3-4 OLB & it didn't workout for him. Gregory is 15 lbs lighter than what Wilson was heading into the draft. Just like Gregory, Wilson played too high & without using much leverage. Combine that with a thin lower body & Gregory will have problems with NFL tackles when they get a hold of him just like Wilson did. Gregory isn't the hardest worker either just like Wilson.

Where did you come up with this figure about us being the 3rd best drafting franchise?
Leonard Williams is the only guy I'd move up to target. If the Jags do in fact fart on themselves and take Fowler at 3 I'd absolutely be ok with moving to 4 to take Williams if it only costs a 2nd rounder.

ESPN or NFL Network had a segment on it. I don't have a link to back it up, but I'm sure that others saw it.

That "info" is purely based on physical similarities. There's a lot more to football than athleticism.
