I'd volunteer to time any of you sub 60 males.
Also, to the people who say they can sprint a 100% for a 400m. You are a liar, Olympians don't do that.

I could break 50 seconds while palming a basketball in each hand.

Just ran it in 50.8, then turned and fired a baseball over a fence 400 feet away.

Nobody said that but Mustang. What I said was the 400 mtr race has a lot to do with how long you can run at top speed for, which somehow correlated to going 100% for the full race to Mustang.

Sprinted the whole 400mtrs? Yes. 100% full speed the whole way? Impossible. But idk how you got that from what I said.

These are my facts:
in high school on the track team, I was 49 second 400 m, or quarter mile.
IF I train now, I'm in my 40's, I MAY could get it down to 1:20.
My guess is this:
Guys over 30:
5% could run 1 minute quarter mile or could quickly train for it.
5% could train for months and get there.
20% could get somewhat close, maybe 1:10-1:20 with a lot of training
and 70% would start off running it and by halfway around the track will quit running, say "frick this shite", and never go near a track again.

What college team did you run for? I mean if that is a fact you would have had quite a few offers.
(Former college track coach here, so this thread has so much bullshite, but maybe it's the new OT baller board)

With training, I'd agree with most people should be able to break a minute.
However, if you randomly took 100 random adults aged 20-30 and asked them to break a minute in the 400m on the spot, I'd expect less than 10 to be able to do it.

Not really. Teams like LSU wouldn't even bat an eye over a 49 guy.

I am in pretty good shape, run about 30 miles a week, and often finish high in my age bracket in local races.
When I do speed work, I have a few 400 m splits worked in. I am not going all out since they are in the middle of a workout, but I typically do them around 1:10 - 1:20 and am pretty gassed at the end. I think I can maybe get it under 1:00, but only just barely.
Use an age grading calculator - like this one.
I entered in 35 year old male running a 5k right at 20 minutes flat. It predicts my 400m time to be 1:14.
I would say that the average 35 year old male can't run a 20 minute 5k. Say 25 minute is more accurate, that would put your 400m prediction time at 1:32.
So no, I don't think "most" adult males can run a sub 60 400m.

They have 7 and 8 year olds running the 400 in about 65 seconds, so....

I feel like I have some knowledge on this subject (track coach). The 400m is the most mentally tough race there is. Typically in middle school 1:00 is the benchmark for a good 400 m runner. Our school record is 55.5 seconds which is flying for a middle schooler. On typical meet days 59 seconds-1:00 wins the 400 m in 7th grade. 57 second-58 seconds wins the 8th grade. There is no way any male touches 1:00 without some type of training. 18-40 year old males with pretty good speed would be capable of getting this with some training.

I guess I see the other side of things, I usually work with the younger kids on our team (usatf) and at nationals some of the kids we see will blow your mind.
It sounds like chad Johnson has a very fast daughter.
Eta: as a matter of fact Shreveport is home to one of those young beasts, kid long jumped over 15 feet. He was 8

That's a hair over 12 mph. Yes. I could do it on a treadmill

This statement alone makes me think you are absolutely full of shite.
If you can run a 49 in high school, colleges will want you.
Not every track program is at an LSU's level, so that statement alone is pointless. Are you implying that if you are not good enough to run at LSU that you are not good enough to run in college?
Secondly, I know for a fact that LSU has taken many 49" guys over the years and even developed some of them into All Americans.
I personally had a kid who ran a season best 49 his senior year who is now running track at a D1 College.

In what context did I imply that it did? I only made mention of that after perusing a few pages of people being like "no way dude".

Ah...
I thought you were implying that it wasn't hard to break 60 on a 400m.
All these Olympic track stars in here have me laughing.
