There was. The entire film was riddled with subtle satire aimed at cliches and stereotypes. The op either didn't recognize this or doesn't like satirical comedy. Die Hard is a comedy/action movie; its intentions were to be over the top. To get real, believable tv, Big Brother may be the better option

I can recognize it as satire, but I didn't notice any aspect of it that was subtle.
As you yourself said, it was over the top.
