How much IT knowledge is needed to migrate one user off of a exchange server onto 365 as a test run. I'd like to migrate my account as a test before I move the whole firm. I read as I started the process that by making changes to the DNS I could cause all users to lose email ability if I didn't properly configure. Thoughts?

No idea, but we did it today. Only getting a few emails. People telling me their email to me is delayed. I've lost my autofill, for now. It wasn't a good day.

The fact that you are asking these questions means you should not be doing it.

It can take up to 48hrs for MX records to propogate out. Most companies make the change on a Friday night to minimize this.

You can use the migration wizard for staged migration and only do your account. If you already changed MX records, you just screwed your other users as they will no longer get email.

We do this for a living..reply with any questions.

Thankfully I stopped after verifying that we owned the domain. How can you set up the 365 for a test run so that I can move to the cloud and the rest of my users can continue to get email on the same domain until i'm ready to move everyone?

The migration wizard allows you to choose between a cut over and a slower migration. It then uses active sync to talk to your exchange server and add an AD record to forward all mail to yourname@yourdomain.onmicrosoft. com.

Depends on the version of outlook. Older version, copy the nk2 file over and name it the same as the profile name. Newer outlook, copy the autostream file over and rename the same as the one outlook created with the new account.

Coldduck,

What is a ballpark in time or cost not including licensing to move one user off a larger exchange 2003 network to 365 that will allow the other users to remain on the same domain? Is it relatively inexpensive or will the bulk of the time for the setup of the original account be high regardless if i move 1 or 30.

Dammit. I don't know what that means.

Sounds like you are mostly there. You just need to run the wizard. Looking at like an hour of time to make sure everything works. The longest part will be the wizard uploading all your current email. $100 bucks. Give me an email and we can converse through my real email account.

What information are you trying to glean from the test run? In other words, what do you need to see from moving the one user that will make you feel comfortable in making a decision?

Export your old nk2 file from your old profile and import it into new. Or try the rename as previous poster mentioned.
