He was still an unproven freshman. How would we know if we had a spark plug coming off the bench? He never tried to find one. I remember one game Epps did that and then I don't thing I ever saw him again.

What exactly am I "pumping"?
This idiot is trying to essentially say that Jones should be more like arguably the greatest college basketball coach in history and we should have dipped into our bench and pulled out an imaginary top-40 prospect. I was critical of Jones often throughout this year, so you can save the "pumper" bullshite.

That is because you wanted to win and not impress scouts to improve your draft status.
And all coaches at this level have to deal with that and the one's who deal with that best have more consistent success.
quote:Not a lot, but I've seen it.
How many times have you seen college coaches draw up a play and the first time a "star' touched the ball, he ignored the play and took the shot.
But to your point, I've argued the last two years that it's not the plays CJJ calls, it's what you imply here, he can't get his kids to do what he asks. And it seems to be a consistent enough issue to be a concern to me.
Lucky for us, Simmons IMHO is just the kind of player CJJ needs to help with that. He knows how to play the game already and he's selfless and coachable from all I hear.

Yep. I look back to Jones' first year and think of a guy like Carmouche. Having a leader on the floor with a great BBall IQ is so important. That team played so far above their abilities and always fought hard. I hate to place the blame at the feet of the players for some of our missteps the last couple of years, but there has to be some culpability. Obviously Jones deserves criticism for poor management of TOs, mystifying inability to inbounds the ball, etc.
All of that aside, it's impossible to not be excited about the general direction we're headed.

Dude, you act like we had 7 Richard Krajewskis on the bench. Elbert Robinson was in the 50s last year coming out of high school and he played in one game the last 2 months of the season.

Negative attitudes hurt our recruiting genius,it is a good thing our coaches have been able to work around y'all so far anyway !

I am a die hard basketball fan.
But don't worry. You are not alone in being an idiot about basketball. The pumpers in here clearly don't have a clue.

Didn't Duke play an 8 man rotation for most of the year? This was one of the few year's in JJ's career he's had a thin bench
And Jones is a freshman, but was in the program for 2 years. Guess what, he would have played at LSU too

That's not something you cant see 50 times a weekend in college ball and seen with teams thought to have very good coaches.
JJ is a good coach. How much better he can become will not be known for a few more yrs. imo

Maybe, but I watch a lot of college hoops. Seems a bit more consistent here.

I'd like to see him improve on holding his kids more accountable and to instill a bit more discipline and consistency into his system. Simmons is already accountable, disciplined and coachable already IMHO, so it helps to have your best player lead by example with the rest of the team and it helps CJJ as a coach.
I want CJJ to succeed because I love LSU hoops and if he succeeds we are successful. But I think it's fair to say he can do better at some of the other aspects of coaching outside recruiting and he'll need to in order to get us where we all should want the program to be.

Sure....it's fair to say he can do better.
It's also fair to say LSU basketball was at a very poor talent level when JJ took over and he has changed that pretty quickly. In my mind, recruiting is the #1 skill a college basketball coach must excel at and everything else is a distant, distant 2nd. Selling basketball at LSU to talented guys who can go to lots of basketball schools in not an easy task.
I am pleased with JJ's effort and results to this point in time. Yeah, it would have been nice to have reached the 2nd round, but I didn't see coaching as the reason we didn't.
My biggest complaint at this time is the fact JJ didn't land that difference maker pt. guard in his 1st 3 yrs here.

Im not disagreeing with this mentality but a distant second??? Coaching plays little to no part in winning and advancing deep into the NCAA Tourney?
Hmmmmmmmmm!

Coach K was down big to Wisconsin and he had to bench his best players. And then Random White Guy 5.0 came in off the bench out of nowhere and took over the game.
Good coaches can do that.
So Coach K's first five McDonalds All Americans weren't getting the job done so he had to go to his sixth McDonalds All American.
Coch K no longer signs "projects". Duke only buys the best out there that have learned to play the game in HS.
Do a search and find out how Coach K brought super stars off the bench his first three years at Duke. Then he signed Johnny Dawkins who became Dukes leading scorer. The rest is history.
He was a two-time All-American and national player of the year as a senior in 1986 at Duke. In Dawkins' senior year at Duke, the 1985–86 season, the Duke Blue Devils attained a win-loss record of 37–3, which was an NCAA record for both games played and games won in a single season. They reached the 1986 NCAA championship game, where they lost to Louisville, 72–69.
You see, K had the best player in the country and lost the Championship.

Talent will get you further in the tourney than coaching will. You take a coaching combo of coach K/RP and place them at a school like ULL and give me the ULL coach with the Duke/UL talent and I am willing to bet my team goes deeper in the tourney than yours.
Am I saying game time coaching makes no difference? Of course not. Only that going deeper in the tourney is decided a lot more off the talent on the floor than the coaching on the bench. imo
Basketball has longer periods of game action in which coaches have little or no involvement due to the pace of the game/fewer breaks in the action.

I really don't understand why LSU fans demand that we win every championship in every sport ever to exist and go undefeated, or else the coach shouldn't be alive.
