It's more different than better

2 year contract = Lease, you get the most value by upgrading regularly.
Next = Buy, you get the most value by using your phone as long as possible.

There are a variety of other factors at play like reselling your phone and the discount you get based on the size of your data plan, but for the most part they are similar options and better is really determined by how often you upgrade your phone.

When it came time to upgrade last year, I calculated it out over the course of two years. The Next ends up being $55 cheaper over that time-span...assuming I don't upgrade early. Not a huge savings, BUT at least I have the option to upgrade in a year if I choose to do so.
