Tech investors are always looking for the hot new gadget or the latest sexy app. But now a lot of tech money is also being funneled into fake meat. Companies are scrambling to find ways to make a better, tastier more meat-like faux burger or pseudo-chicken strip. Food writer and carnivore Corby Kummer decided to check out the latest frontiers of fake meat, and he writes about what he found and tasted in MIT Technology Review. the headline gives you a clue. It's called "The Problem With Fake Meat." Corby, welcome to the program.
I was listening to NPR yesterday evening and this segment came on LINK. I'm curious if any of you would feel comfortable with eating faux meat in the near future. The idea rubs me the wrong way. But it does seem like a movement which might grab some attention.
The interview is about 9 minutes long.

I'll stick with the real thing for now

I don't mind vegetarian food and veggie burgers and such. What I don't like is when vegetarian products try to mask themselves as meat.
We had a weird vegan restaurant that opened here whose specialty was that. All this weird fake meat crap (like fake meat philly cheese "steak"). It quickly went out of business. Many (possibly most) vegetarians don't like meat because they don't like the taste/texture. Trying to replicate it is just weird.

I really don't see the issue with this in the information age. consumers should be able to make decisions for themselves. if there's enough demand for it, then go for it. if it's an efficient way of curing world hunger, by all means outsource it to a country in need for profit
if they're implementing it in fresh meat, then I think it should be labeled

I agree.
I love vegetables and other meatless items. I don't want them to try to taste like meat.

exactly. it's the free market. they're the ones taking the risk and allegedly did their due diligence before opening up. I'm not going to eat it, but that's my preference
