If they expand or contract quickly, they are bad. If they compress and don't expand, they are bad. It should be a controlled compression and expansion

I'll add that you can remove your rear shocks much easier than your front shocks. Test one or both rear shocks, if they are bad, get 4 new ones. Get aftermarket shocks, bikstein, rancho, Fox, etc. Put the rears yourself and only pay $100-150 for fronts at alignment shop.
