This is a good point. I think the accent matter serves as an overall theme of the movie. Namely, they had retreated to this village to try and recreate an idealistic time in history that they think was real. In actuality, that idealistic time is illusory, just like their inability to recreate the way people spoke during that time.
I'm grateful for this thread. The more I think about this movie the more I think that it is not only underrated, but it is also pretty visionary.
