Raegnar wants to go to heaven not Valhalla

It would seem so. As I alluded to earlier, Ragnar seems pretty practical in that he seeks a better future for his people. His logic, other than just wanting be with Athelstan again, would seem to be that he recognizes that the Christians have a more advanced/civilized society and perhaps they have the right of it in belief in their one god. This is suggested in a number of ways throughout the series. Off the top of my head:
1. Ragnar, after the death of his unborn son, asks why the gods give with one hand and take away with the other.
2. Earl Haraldson asks the Seer if the gods exist and the Seer just chuckles.
3. A group of Vikings including Floki, describe the Norse myth of the creation of earth/the universe and then Floki smiles and asks Athelstan how he thinks it was created. At which point Athelstan has a humorous and perplexed look on his face.
4. And even Floki, questions the gods after the devastating defeat of the Vikings against Paris saying that he did everything possible to secure victory.
