Gymnast are athletic and they compete....they are competitors...not necessarily athletes.
They are definitely athletes... it's just not a sport.

there isn't a score involved in either
There is often as much or much more money involved in a large business negotiation or important trial than in a poker game.
No score?
The dude that negotiated selling that app to FB for $3B. No score involved there?
The dude that wins a massive patent infringement suit for a company. No score there?
Business men, lawyers and poker players - not athletes.

What about diving? Definitely athletes, but there are judges involved. Does that mean it's not a sport?
What about track and field? Usain Bolt - no doubt an athlete. Track has to be a sport right?

Starting to slide into a grayer area, but I'd say it's a sport since they are all running simultaneously.

Various activities were graded on 10 components of athleticism: endurance, strength, power, speed, agility, flexibility, nerve, durability, hand-eye coordination and analytic aptitude. Boxing ranked first, followed by hockey, football and basketball. Golf ranked -- take a deep breath -- 51st out of the 60 sports, just behind table tennis and horse racing. It did, however, place just ahead of cheerleading and roller-skating, with fishing finishing last.

I'll throw a chink in the "have to directly compete against someone to be a sport" argument. If usain bolt races tyson Gay side by side...sport. If they run separately & winner judged by time....competition?

Nope, nevermind, anything that says golf is more athletic than cheerleading is null and void

Should Golfers be called athletes?
Do you know how many golfers are on TD that would like to think they are athletes?

I guess you can call diving a competition, but I do view track as a sport. Although parts of it (hammer throw, discus) seem more like games.
The Olympic Games are called the Olympic Games for a reason though I guess. There are a lot of things I'd classify as games or competitions.
Golf being one of those, as well as darts and bowling.

Athletes are highly skilled at a some type of physical act that does not come natural to most people. Some of those skills are certainly more desirable and challenging than others, but trying to qualify the definition is pretty useless since there are so many exceptions that you cannot have a general definition.
350lb offensive lineman is not the same as a 230lb running back
NASCAR driver is not the same as a track and field runner
Weightlifter is not the same as a gymnast
Fencing, curling, archery, synchronized swimming, equestrian jumping are all Olympic sports
Trying to define an athlete is an excercise in futility. Instead, the argument should be one that ranks the skill set required, both physical and mental, for a sport.
