every tree i see in town is absolutely loaded when the season rolls around. most people let them rot. i'd ask before i went around picking in people's yards though.
best bet to buy some is to go to a local fruit stand. i've never seen them in a proper grocery store.

All the trees I've seen have very small fruit just starting to show.
