What did you use for the core on it? For an 8" monkey's fist, I'd use a softball for the core. With 1/2“ rope, you'd probably need 5 to 6 rows to make the knot.
I've made plenty smaller ones. I even have a 3" one on my bow rope on the boat. I put a 3/4" socket for the core on that one. It weighs just enough to toss to someone waiting at the dock.

Forgive my ignorance, but what are these used for?
Dog toy? Bondage stuff?

I can make them. You don't need anything for a core. I never used anything.

My cousin uses them in his tree business to throw safety ropes and such up over branches

Easier to do a core of a softball or tennis ball filled with lead shot for weight.
That line will be tougher bc it's small for the size of the ball you want. As someone else said you will have 5 or 6 rows wide. It just takes a while.

In the Navy, they had a lead ball in the center. There were used on the end of the heaving lines to get the larger main mooring lines to the pier.

I can see using a jig if your trying to do small line, but the bigger the line the easier it is. You can make it loose then tighten it up after you are done. That way you can put it together easily.

I make monkey fist keychains. Have made some larger ones to hang on the back of vehicles. Have not made a door stop, but as it's an easy knot.....should be simple enough. The core is used to weigh the knot down. Must have something to tie the knot around. 20 years in the Navy, I learned something! Contact me for any help. I am a retired Boatswain's Mate Chief.

I learned how to make them working in the oil patch. Once you get your first one they come pretty easy after. We never put anything in the inside. A Phillips screwdriver will help you the get it tightened up after your finish winding it.

I learned how to make these in 2004 and stull remember how.
The trick is not what the size of the weight you have in the center is, it's the thickness of the rope.
The fewest rows for coverage of your weight the better form and easier it is to do.
3 or 4 is good enough.
I learned how to do this then go overboard. I made a bola with 3 monkey fists spliced together.
Let's just say I can do anything with rope. My favorite merit badge was Pioneering.
